Color: ruby red Bouquet: hints of licorice, spices, cherry and rose petals Taste: black cherry, plum and cinnamon leading into a powerful and intense finish. Valeirano displays surprising minerality, supported with phenomenal structure. Hints of tea leaf and balsamic notes on the nose and palate recur. The finish is intense, while tannins are noble.
90% of the work we do at La Spinetta is in the vineyards, with just 10% in the cellar. The Rivetti family story begins in the 1890s, when Giovanni Rivetti, grandfather of the Theree Rivetti brothers, Carlo, Bruno and Giorgio, left Piedmont for Argentina. Like many Italians of that time, he dreamed of returning rich and a powerful man, perhaps even one day able to make a great wine in his homeland. He never did, though his son, Giuseppe (nicknamed Pin) did. Pin married Lidia, bought vineyards and began to make wine. In 1977 the family took up residence at LA SPINETTA (top of the hill) in Castagnole Lanze. It was the heart of the Moscato d’Asti country,.The first red wine made, Barbera Cà di Pian. In 1989 the Rivettis dedicated their red blend Pin to their father. In 1995 they started to make their first Barbaresco, Gallina. In 1996 and 1997 the Barbarescos Starderi, Barbera d'Alba Gallina and Barbaresco Valeirano follow. In 1998 premiered the Barbera d'Asti Superiore. In 2000 the family’s ambition of also making a Barolo became reality. The Rivettis acquired vineyards in Grinzane Cavour and built a state of the art cellar, Barolo Campè. Since 2003 visitors are welcomed to visit also Campè, outside the town of Grinzane Cavour. In 2001 LA SPINETTA expanded over the borders of Piedmont and acquired 65 hectares of vineyards in Tuscany, between Pisa and Volterra, to make three different 100% Sangiovese wines, as Sangiovese to La Spinetta is the true ambassador of the Tuscan terrain.
From the Treiso township, the 2014 Barbaresco Valeirano Vürsù represents a stylistic marriage of the elegant Gallina and the more powerful Starderi crus (both in the Neive township). This is a compact and fine Nebbiolo with a mid-weight style and slightly sweet tannins. In terms of its flavor profile, the wine shows savory spice and barbecue smoke followed by blackberry and dried cherry. In a sense, this wine borrows the best attributes of the other two Barbaresco expressions also reviewed in this report.
The 2014 Barbaresco Vigneto Valeirano is dark, virile and brooding. Structurally, it is more similar to the Starderi than the Gallina, but the darker fruit profile, and spiced, mentholated notes are all super-typical of the wines from Treiso. Black cherry, plum, cinnamon, leather and menthol infuse a finish that gains in power and intensity as the wine sits in the glass. Gravitas, power and weight are the signatures.
Intense aromas of tar and dried strawberry with some walnut shell. Full body, chewy and powerful. Needs some years to soften. Shows excellent quality for this difficult vintage. Drink in 2019.
An elegant style, this delivers cherry, strawberry, tar and underbrush flavors. Firm and compact on the taut, fresh finish. Best from 2020 through 2030. 1,100 cases made, 50 cases imported. — BS
