This vintage is showing the classic characteristics of Spring Mountain. On the nose this young Cabernet shows cedar, cassis and bay leaf interwoven violets and white peppercorn. The palate presents notes of blackberry bramble, plum and cocoa integrated with a layer of bright red fruits and hints of thyme and sage. A strong smooth backbone of oak and tannin balance out the fruit providing for long term aging of 15+ years. One of the best of this decade, ideal conditions prevailed during flowering led to a balanced and healthy crop. The seasoned progressed with mild summer days that built towards a warmer ripening period. The 2016 wines have an exceptional purity of fruit with elegance, finesse and complexity.

Spring Mountain Vineyard is an 845-acre estate on the eastern slopes of Spring Mountain in Napa Valley where austere soils produce extremely low yields of intensely flavored, long-lived wines. Only 225 acres are planted to vine, representing 135 discrete vineyard blocks with multiple soil types, exposures and microclimates. The privately owned estate is comprised of four historic vineyards first planted to vine in the late 1800s. Only estate bottled wines are produced.

Features black currant, blackberry and boysenberry reduction flavors that are tightly coiled for now, carried by well-embedded acidity and racy graphite notes. The long finish pumps out fruit, with extra anise and sweet tobacco elements checking in. This should evolve well in the cellar. Best from 2022 through 2040. (JM)
