The class and personality of Brunello di Montalcino are already evident to the nose, with very complex aromas that delicately – nevertheless tirelessly – emerge and multiply. On the palate this wine is balanced, austere and powerful, with a very persistent finish and aristocratic tannins. Pairs well with beef and lamb, and hard aged cheeses.
A Brunello of considerable aging potential. Matured for a total of 4 years in cask and bottle before release.
Montalcino’s vineyards are sheltered by Mount Amiata and kept dry by sea breezes from across the hills to the west. Densely planted vineyards produce low average yields, allowing wines with concentration, complexity and considerable aging potential. Fermentation took place in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. Maceration lasted about 15 days in steel vats before malolactic fermentation in oak barrels. The wine was aged in large Slavonian oak casks for three years and then one year in bottle before release.
The Tenuta la Fuga 2015 Brunello di Montalcino needs a little extra time to open, as the wine is initially shy. There are some flinty notes that lift quickly to reveal mild fruit aromas of blackberry and dried raspberry. The fruit feels a little closed, and the mouthfeel is silky and dry. I'd recommend capturing that fruit while it lasts and drinking this Brunello within the next 10 years or so. Some 20,000 bottles of it were made.
The first vintage for the bottling of this wine was in 1997, in honor of “the two sisters,” Fabia Cornaro dell’Acqua and Giovanna Cornaro Folonari, wife of Ambrogio and mother of Giovanni Folonari, the proprietors of the estate. The 2015 Le due Sorelle Brunello di Montalcino Riserva is expressive of the estate’s Mediterranean influence with a sun-kissed feel. It offers concentrated aromatics of candied red cherry, dusty earth, balsamic, and dried violets. The palate remains classic while taking on some richness of texture from the warmth of the vintage. It is enjoyable and approachable now or can be set aside for several years to come.
