Let's celebrate with one of Lynne's favorite pleasures—fine wine.

The theme for this tasting is "California and Bordeaux." It isn't a contest, since both places are among the greatest wine-producing regions of the world. We'll compare and contrast new-world and old-world styles by tasting outstanding examples of white (Sauvignon Blanc) and red (Cabernet Sauvignon-Merlot).  The featured wines are listed below.

Before the Event

• Chill the two white wines in the refrigerator for at least an hour, or as far ahead of time as you want.
• Have four stem wine glasses available for each person in attendance. You can use the same size glass for all of the wines, but larger stemware is preferrable - especially for the reds.
• Open all the wines before the event starts. Save the corks. Whites should be removed from the refrigerator and opened about 10 minutes ahead of time. Unless you are in a really warm place, there is no need for ice buckets to keep them cool. Reds may be opened up to 30 minutes beforehand, and should be at cool room temperature.
• Have light crackers or breadsticks available if you would like them during the tasting. Meats or cheeses are OK too, but nothing too heavy. After the formal part of the tasting you can experiment with any foods you like. We'll talk about food pairings that work well with each.

After the Event

• Recork the bottles to save the remaining wine. They will keep for up to several days in the refrigerator. Bring the reds back to room temperature before next use.
• Invite friends and family to share the wine that is left! It is too good to waste, and you'll be able to conduct your own version of the tasting for them.
