In the early years at Jameson, our unused barrels were left exposed to the elements in the courtyard of our distillery. When the time came to fill those barrels with whiskey, our coopers would invigorate them with a quick char. But what started as upkeep proved to have a nice effect on the whiskey that rested within. Whiskey that has spent time in double charred barrels carries an untold richness and complexity.
Matured in a combination of American oak, sherry casks and double charred bourbon barrels, Jameson Black Barrel is a blend of ‘small batch’ grain and traditional Irish pot still whiskeys.
Rich flavors of fruit, toasted wood, warm spice and vanilla sweetness, the double charring delivers an embellished finish. The end result - a fitting tribute to double charring and the fearless coopers who uncovered it.
Nose: Rich and full, developing into the succulent sweetness of exotic fruits like nectarines, apricot and papaya. Taste: A burst of flavours combine to produce a creamy, luscious taste experience. The special fruity sweetness from the grain remains consistent, while the waves of vanilla, toasted wood and spices roll through from the pot still whiskey and flame charred barrels. Finish: An incredibly long finish with fruit and wood spices lingering in perfect proportion, delivering an extremely rich and luxurious taste experience.
The former Bourbon barrels used to mature this whiskey were “charred and double charred,” the producer says, to coax more from the barrel wood. Look for an almost pina colada-like effect: coconut and tropical fruit aromas, and a rich, honey-soaked palate that shows caramelized pineapple and dried apricot.
Sumptuously rich and intense whiskey emerges from these double-charred casks; a seduction of butterscotch, treacle, toasted nuts, scorched coconut, raisin, and vanilla essence. Secure in its deep-centered sweetness, it revels in caramelized sugar, dark vanilla, pecan nut slice, creme brulee, peppery spice, and fleshy fruits gloomily submerged in sticky, umber syrups. Memorable for its long, satisfying, toasted aftertaste, heavy on the vanilla and raisins.
