On the eye : The color is characterised by a brilliant light straw-gold. Effervescence is dense and persistent, with fine, regular bubbles. On the nose : Initially the nose is precise, expressive and refreshing, with notes of citrus and yellow fruit; floral fragrances (vine flowers, elderflowers) and pastry aromas (brioche, toast, grilled almond) follow. On the palate : A lively, fresh and balanced attack, with pastry, spice (vanilla) and fruity (morello cherry, candied plum) notes. The full texture precedes a clean, refreshing finish marked by citrus fruit aromas.
There is great intensity to this finely crafted Champagne. It's rich and toasty, with flavors of ripe gooseberries and, in this example, some good bottle age. Henriot, which also owns Bouchard P?re et Fils in Burgundy, is obviously on a good streak at the moment. Imported by Henriot USA.
(60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay; 8 g/l dosage; L1234411212): Light gold. Lees-accented orchard and citrus fruit aromas are complicated by sweet butter, iodine and smoky minerals. Dry and expansive on the palate, offering lively pear and melon flavors and a refreshingly bitter touch of orange pith. Ample but lithe brut, with very good finishing punch and repeating smoke and pear qualities.
The NV Brut Souverain is a tasty, entry-level offering laced with ripe pears, apricots, biscuit and spices. It shows lovely mid-palate presence and an accessible personality ideal for drinking over the next few years. Dosage is 8 grams per liter. This is Lot L1106921210. Disgorged December 2010. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2014.
