Full and rich, this is an outstanding example of the quality that can be achieved when great winemakers harvest grapes from a perfect terroir for the varietal, and then handle them minimally to let the goodness flow through to the bottle. All of the bright, red fruit you expect from Gamay is there, surrounded by dark-currant notes, generous earthiness, and balanced by proper acidity. This is a truly first-rate Beaujolais.

The 2016 Morgon Côte du Py Javernières is exceptional, unfurling in the glass with a complex bouquet of crushed cassis, dark wild berries, grilled meat, wood smoke and rich soil tones. On the palate, it's full-bodied, ample and layered, with a multidimensional mid-palate, melting tannins and juicy acids, concluding with a long finish. It will be well worth seeking out.
